Development, Rehabilitation & Outreach Project (DROP)

This project of The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) aims at the overall socio-economic development of Teppeda Begur village of Nelamangala, Bangalore rural district, by using a watershed approach with special emphasis on water resource management and groundwater recharging. The project covers T.Begur village and two hamlet villages, with 586 households. The project period is 30 months, starting on March 1st, 2006.

 

The key issues addressed by the project are:

· The groundwater depletion due to continuous exploitation by various sectors;

· The lack of adequate water supply and sanitation services in the village;

· The fact that the water use practices are not in accordance with the water availability.

 

The project aims are:

· Ensuring long-term availability of groundwater resources in the area by eco-restoration through catchment treatment measures, artificial groundwater recharge and demand management measures;

· Improving the quality of life of the community by undertaking interventions in the areas of water supply, sanitation, hygiene, health and education;

· Institutional development and community empowerment.

 

IYD assists the community in the implementation of the project through community mobilization, training and capacity building, technical surveys and design and construction supervision.
